It’s extremely easy to have a fully featured desktop that is open source software only.
Open hardware is hard though.
Some call that “source available” and not open source.
I find it interesting that Proton’s other alias solution doesn’t even know what domain aliases are used for. That information shouldn’t be necessary.
Linux has a sandbox solution growing in popularity, flatpak.

Banks don’t have an ad business like this, though they will have some advertising in general.
They also all, I believe by law, have opt-out for all third party sharing of data for this purpose.
General advice is never use a debit card, use a credit card, it changes theft from a big problem to a manageable one.

On some distros its packaged, trivial. On others its not and annoying. How well it works depends on the exact usage.

Only targeting new hardware is just a win-win-win for them.
Hardware partners love it, planned obsolescence is just new sales. Legal departments love it, constantly worse DRM. The development teams like it, less support burden. Marketing loves AI being a core feature.
They have no competition. There is no downside for them.

There are like 5 speed and 5 power levels. The only alternative is all cables are stupidly short and expensive.
They do have standard icons for them, but it’s not required to use them. Companies like Apple are a problem case there since they value a clean look over information, random Chinese brands sometimes use them.
This is the same as all other solutions.
Everything they do is open source, artificially holding back features doesn’t make sense.
