  • You know how bad it was to buy just a SIM card lately? Really hard! Walmart doesn’t sell them, Best Buy doesn’t have just SIM card for sale anymore unless it’s “Simple mobile” “Ultra wireless” or some shoddy NVMO. or Mint, but Mint doesn’t do mobile hotspot plans 😮‍💨.

My best guess, I’m going to buy a Tracfone SIM probably, bc it supports T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon, and their cheapest plan is $10/mo for 1GB data which is mostly for emergencies anyway since I use WiFi at home and work.

  • I think people reject that it’s as bad as they’re told because that don’t like to believe it’s that bad, or that there’s no way companies would do that to them. People don’t accept being told “you’re making a big mistake” and to feel dumb about it.

That’s my take. I had somebody at work ask what I do regarding privacy and I realized I lit up with excitement to share and had to immediately dial it back to not freak them out. I started out small and simple and emailed them since basics after chatting. Said, if they wanted additional info let me know " so that it’s up to them to continue the journey (down the rabbit hole lol).

But just glad to see others gaining the knowledge. My journey wasn’t immediate, it’s gradual, so I have to be mindful of their process too.

  • This is actually an Android feature. iOS, too. It’ll give a random MAC or device MAC depending on what you want.

My MDM at work for Android-based handhelds I’ve configured to device MAC so I can geofence devices and keep track of them. If an employee connects to the employee network (which has to be configured by IT) we set it up with with device only MAC so we can add that device to the allowed list. Apple warns “it enables tracking” but if they ask I tell them in public it might be configured that way but we don’t care nor monitor that closely. If someone shares out the WiFi password by digging through settings, it wouldn’t matter as it’s not allowed.

Anyway, just thought I’d share both mainstream OSes do this now for a few years now.

  • Man, I setup Immich for my whole family, a RAID6 of enterprise drives with about 10TB total available storage, and 1TB/user. I’ve got symmetrical 1Gbs fiber, too. Does anyone use it? No. The last get together I told them if anyone wanted help setting it up, I wouldn’t mind. And no takers really. I said it’s easy enough anymore with a 1TB SSD being <$100 it’d last a very long time they could back up too that, far more than Google allows… Nope…

It’s insane to me that nobody wants to change, but when these companies change on everyone, they just let it happen.

  • I just use Google Messages, but I’m signed out of the app. Actually, no Google acct on my whole phone. I stick to F-Droid for apps of I need em.

The way I see it, mousy sms stiff goes through the carrier servers I’d not Google, and at least Messages is RCS. However, I’m running XMPP and jmp.chat for a phone number to test out switching entirely and setting up friends and family on my server. Trying to go full hermit mode.
