I am also using Beszel after using checkmk. For me checkmk was way too complicated (but is also way more powerfull) to setup and maintain propperly. So I switcheed to beszel because it is much easier and good enough for my use case which is:

• Is the thing running at all?
• Disk full?
• CPU, network, etc. on full throttle for some strange reason?
• send me a mail if somethings wrong

Besides that I don’t need anything. The only thing missing is SNMP support to check switches, routers and AP’s.

I do cooking on living history events for dozens of people. And creating the shopping list for them (where a recipe is based on another recipe) is always a painpoint. This sounds versy interesting (never heard of it).

My cabinet currently is 9HE high and it can fit 2 mini-pc’s easily and all the rest. Just the NAS does not fit into it. For that I would need at least 12HE.

Digitus has a lot to offer for 10" Racks. I use a lot of their Basic stuff for my Racks. AS a Server I am a fan of Mini-PC’s. They are (imho) good enough for SOHO users. For storage an off the shelf NAS is small enough to fit inside the Rack. I did not find a good option yet for a TrueNAS solution (maybe one of the NAS solutions where you flash your own operating system?).

From my 10" homelab:

• Enclosing: Digitus 10" 9HE Wandgehäuse. But today I would get the 12HE version of it (my Homelab expanded beyond the available space)
• Patchfield: Digitus 10" 12 Port LSA Patchpanel Weiß. There are also keystone version if you prefer them. I did go for this because it is cheaper and I only need RJ45.
• Power connector: DIGITUS 10 Zoll Steckdosenleiste. it has 4 sockjets and a switch. I am using 2 of them.
• Shelfs for Servers, etc.: Digitus 10" Fachboden. I use them to keep my Mini-PC’s and router in the Rack.
• Router: Draytek Vigor2927 it just fits on a shelf and all Ports are accessible. It is connected to a Fibre-Modem, so it just being a router is good enough for me.
• Switch: ALLNET Switch smart managed 16 Port Gigabit. Unfortunately I could not find an option including PoE (that is reasonably priced…) so I went for this managed Switch and an extra PoE Switch.
• PoE Switch: YuanLey 11 Port Gigabit PoE Switch, 8 PoE+ Port 1000 Mbit/s, 2 Gigabit Uplink, 1 SFP Port, 120W 802.3af/at. It is not directly obvious from the product page. But the 2 included Rackmount ears work for a 10" Rack.
• Mini-PC as Server: HP EliteDesk 800 G3 Desktop-Mini-PC . You can get these on the used market for cheap. Look if you can find one with an i5-8500T (KabyLake architecture). These chips have very good Transcoding qualities (Quicksync)
• NAS: I use a Synology DS-918+. It fits on a shelf isnide the Rack. but due to Space limitations (9HE instead of 12HE) it is now stacked on top of my Rack.

I don’t know where you are located. So maybe you need to check if these are available to you.

I think it is kinda misleading that they advertise the phone number support so strongly on their website, but do not support it yet according to their own site:

If they would already support phone numbers, I would immediately sign up. But for just E-Mail: I can use my E-Mail providers (mailbox.org) option for that. Only benefit is the direct Browser integration.

Didn’t know this existed. Gives the flexibility to choose between different Hardware Vendors.

I would also propose going with Tailscale instead If a VPN + DynDNS solution. Imho it is a lot easier to Setup compared to VPN + DynDNS If you are a beginner and just starting out.

If at some point you need more and then is available in the free Tier of Tailscale and you do not want to pay for it (and you have built up some knowledge!) you can switch to something like Headscale or Netbird.

This is the way to Go!

This is all correct and i get it. I was wondering about the VOB part for MakeMKV. Because I never get a VOB Out of MakeMKV.

For me MakeMKV gives me a single or multiple (depending on how many I choose) .mkv files for the video files vailable on a DVD/BlueRay. I can then decide to use them as they are, or run them through Handbrake to convert to my desired format.

Isn’t this the case on your side?

for me it sounds like you actually do not want to communicate via E-Mail (for obvious reasons) but require one for registering with a service that you actually want to use. Can’t you use a throw away E-Mail to register at the service? Something like the anonbox from the Chao Computer Club: https://www.anonbox.net/de/

That way you can create an account with a throw-away Email and then use the account without any linking to you. But be sure to use an anonymuous, non-trackable wayy when creating this throw-away mail and also while using the service you are registering for.

I don’t see how E2EE would be that important for Zulip. It is mostly used in Teams who work together on a project or for a specific business/company. They all know each other (or at least part of the Teams) and share the information. And it is (typically) run on dedicated hardware owned by the Team.

So i personally see no benefit for E2EE in these kind of contexts.

I really like that gene therapies are used to help improve peoples lives by creating or improving treatments. Please more of this!

This is something very important: Don’t focus on aplications (FOSS or not) but on open data formats and proper import/export mechanisms so you can switch applications easily.

Thanks for the comment. But I think something like a simple budgeting tool does not really fit my need. I could use my existing banking solution and achieve the same thing. But I want harder restrictions like:

• Sent some money once per month
• No possibility to exceed the budget, because it is not linked to my bank account whatsoever
