Yeah DMZ game servers are a good idea. I’d image one with something immutable, get it all set up and then “have at ye!”. If someone pwns it you just yank the cord. Since they are identical you can have them both set up, someone owns it, you yank/replace and your friends just go right back to it.

If I did something like this I wouldn’t even ssh into them, just have them in some dark corner with a small kb/m/monitor. Totally different subnet.

For Linux: Anything Intel 4xxx is fine, later is better obviously. 4GB RAM is OK for one family, 8GB gives enough headroom to host NextCloud for a small office. SSD for operating system makes it snappy as fuck at the terminal but aren’t mandatory, slow drives for storage are fine.

I haven’t really looked into how it works, but it’s supposed to keep the apps in the work profile separate. I use it because our time clock app is a privacy nightmare and I can completely disable it with one click when I’m not working.

I use an app from F-Droid called Shelter.

I have a shitty tracking app I have to use, I have it in the work profile with shelter, AFAIK that keeps it siloed from my regular apps

Gnome calendar is working well for me on desktop, except for a weird bug re: GMT flagged subscribed calendars and the ongoing/upcoming pane to the left. It’s just showing those calendars in GMT and since I can control the display color I can handle it.

edit: naw, one has to install google play services (and sign in) in order to use their location services which are required for google maps. hard pass.

My 6a is all the phone I need. Doesn’t lag. Camera isn’t great but I hear that there is better software available than stock(?)

I think Firefox with maps.google uses Firefox location, because I’ve used it like you, to supplement the open source maps. I don’t have google location on my phone at all.

The thing I need is street addresses, which OSM doesn’t really have yet for a lot of streets.

Can you run google maps without their location service? That’s the one thing I really miss and there’s no way to do it with Calyx that I know of

Those are the big three players in alternative operating systems that I know of. I use Calyx because my threat model is corporate data collection more than absolute security. Ironically, the best phones to put these operating systems on are the Google Pixel line because you can unlock and lock the bootloader. I’m not sure if there are other phones that allow this but the websites of the OS should guide you to hardware.
