Open Source@lemmy.ml•What are some FOSS programs that you think are a far better user experience than their counterparts?
3·3 years agoAnd KDE looks so much better than windows’ DE. It’s also more versatile.
Gnome just copied Apple, which I guess somebody had to do in order to have them switch to something that looks familiar.
However Meredith Whittaker, the president of Signal, said that they were “more optimistic than we were when we began engaging with the UK government”.
So they aren’t leaving the UK? I’m confused…

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Britain Admits Defeat in Controversial Fight to Break Encryption
3·3 years agoThat encryption can have a backdoor for “the good guys” to use but never the bad guys? I guess this is defeated then.

Science@beehaw.org•Scientists use quantum device to slow chemical process by factor of 100bn
6·3 years agoVery frustrating.
This allowed them to design and map this very complicated problem onto a relatively small quantum device – and then slow the process down by a factor of 100 billion.
What does this even mean???

Privacy@lemmy.ml•What are the recommend changes to make iPhone more private?
335·3 years agoThere is no privacy on an iPhone. The software is controlled by Apple. You basically don’t own your device. All the toggles and different modes are cute, but mean nothing to Apple. They are like the buttons at the pedestrian crossing: you can hit it to make yourself feel good, but they’ll keep doing what they do regardless of you hitting it or not.
It’s not what you want to hear, but it’s the reality of it.
I can’t even find a custom or stock rom for it :/ You might not have picked the best phone for privacy my dude.

Science@beehaw.org•Engineers Just Made Concrete 30% Stronger. The Secret Ingredient? Coffee.
10·3 years agoThe disposal of organic waste poses an environmental challenge as it emits large amounts of greenhouse gasses including methane and carbon dioxide, which contribute to climate change,
I mean, yeah, but isn’t it carbon neutral? The coffee comes from the earth, returns to the earth. And couldn’t coffee also be used for biogas?
natural sand as the particulate’s rough exterior provides more surface area for water and cement to bind
What further puzzles me is how they decided to use coffee. Surely there are many other waste products that have the required structure. Is coffee the first thing they tried?

Technology@lemmy.ml•Windows feature that resets system clocks based on random data is wreaking havoc
17·3 years agoDon’t need one. If you can read C/C++ you can read the kernel code. And in most cases, you won’t have to, as the problem is probably in a component in the distro. Those are written in python, ruby, or bash, which are all much more readable than C/C++.
No such luck on windows

Technology@lemmy.ml•Windows feature that resets system clocks based on random data is wreaking havoc
273·3 years agoIndeed, nothing is perfect, but closed source stuff doesn’t provide a lot of recourse. If you have a linux expert in your team, they can investigate and if need be even dig into the code of linux itself to find the core issue. Microsoft doesn’t provide anything even remotely similar.

Science@beehaw.org•Scientists Regrow Retina Cells to Tackle Leading Cause of Blindness Using Nanotechnology
5·3 years agohe team would squirt polyacrylonitrile and Jeffamine polymers in molten form through an electrical current in a technique known as “electrospinning.” The high voltage caused molecular changes in the polymers that saw them become solid again, resembling a scaffold of tiny fibers that attracted water yet maintained mechanical strength.
Pity they didn’t explain what those materials even are. I wikipedia doesn’t do a good job of explaining it as it looks copy pasted out of a chemistry book.
Still, 3D scaffold used to grow retina cells sounds pretty cool.

You’re relying on windows for critical infrastructure? Are you nuts?
Same argument for fruit based products.
Why isn’t this video uploaded to peertube instead of some dude’s personal bog?
How is matrix not usable?

Video? Not just screen resolution?
I have a RPi3 and can’t play anything above 720p.
