The problem is when you try to understand the other side, you have to hear them.

There are a quite a few cases with anguished parents trying to move some loved child out of a sect (Scientology, the Family etc.) ending up brainwashed.

It’s sandboxed as a user app, the goal being that you can plug it’s inputs so the outputs are less talkative to Google’s servers, it will still call home until you remove its network permissions, but then notifications don’t work.

I understand it makes things easy. I’m not a fan of that though. I know if you send mail from your new address to someone using gmail, google will get that address. But the robots have to then create a new advertising profile corresponding to that address and that profile is empty . If you tell google send it all to this new address, then google can already stuff the profile of your new address with the info from your gmail account. (And no: robots are stupid because there are hundreds of new emails created every second, they don’t understand that name.surname@gmail.com = name.surname@anyothermail.com)

You have to change one after the other the emails in each important account you have (friends, family, employer, governmental agencies, ethical brands) and keep the ones you suspect of being sellers of your ID have the now secondary gmail one.

Paid builds. You get Access to the source code but you can either build yourself or pay a small amount to have a packaged built and updated whenever.

I also like the twice a year nag screen thunderbird or Wikipedia uses (KDE was right to start doing it too, in my books).

I don’t believe a small donate button in the “about” section of the settings screen is of any use.

BTW: anyone can use it, it’s called olvid , on github , FOSS, matrix based E2E, public funded (no adverts, no corporate ownership), and uses IRL authentication to add contacts instead of using the devices contact lists (by showing each other a generated QR code).

Or morally better than breaking TOS, use a FOOS alternative like Jellyfin.
