  • I use this.

I have Ms VoIP as my provider. $1 month per line and 1 cent per min.

I have a grand stream sip adapter… Configured with my providers info and my creds. Phone can plug into it. Works just fine. Plus you can use any sip client to connect to the same line from mobile or PC.

Also, my old house had pots lines in every room. I took my grand stream and wired it into the house, not a phone. So I can plug regular phones into any of the original outlets and it works as it directly connected to the grand stream. I have 4 regular phones all running over original wires into the grandstream using sip

  • It’s all about privacy.

I am amazed at services offered that run rampant in the home.

My ISP offers fiber. But only if you also sign up for managed wifi where they manage your internal net…no way

I got a quote for solar power…but they must use a 3rd party cloud to manage your power and it uses eth over electrical … If you use eth over electrical already, then it does whatever it wants in your home network …no way.

Cell phones? They all go into a guest wifi…not on my home network.

  • We are all in same boat. Ive gotten dozens upon dozens of letters from companies. Most even say, sorry we were hacked 8 months ago. Letting you know all your personal info was stolen.

I’m sure my social security number, work history, previous addresses, relatives, cars I owned, houses…probably how many times I shit per day also.

Just keep your credit permanently frozen until you need it. Keeps credit card offers from your mailbox also…

  • Improve user experience?

I don’t give a flying fuck if a web page loads .5 seconds faster.

What u care about is an interface that works, has labels instead of symbols, that doesn’t change every month trying to be more minimalist.

A bank website doesn’t need my browser history or my charges to Amex or what pets I have or what car I drive or the color of my bedroom. But they want all that and a mobile phone number to tie it all up with a common index. VoIP numbers are refused because they change too often.

    That’s what pisses me off

  • I have a rack in my garage.

My advice, keep it simple, keep it virtual.

I dumpster dove for hardware and run proxmox on hosts. Not even clustered, just simple stand alone proxmox hosts. Connect to my Synology storage device and done.

I run next cloud for webDav contacts and calendar (fuck Google), it does photo and do. Storage. The next client is free from F-Droid for Android and works on debian desktops like a charm.

    I run Minecraft server

    I run home automation server

    I run a media server.

Proxmox backs everything up on schedule

All I need to do is get off-site backup setup for Synology important data and I’m all set.

It’s really not as hard as you think if you keep it simple

  • From experience, with facial scan or fingerprint scan available on Apple, 3rd party app require it. E.g. okta MFA login, for those with apple phones, using face scan can be forced. I know you are free to decline and free to quit the company requiring it, but just like any new data set, you soon won’t be able to live without providing it.

Remember when a social security number was introduced, gov promised it wouldn’t be used as a identification number for any other purpose . Forward 50 years and now you can’t do anything without it.
