I use this.
I have Ms VoIP as my provider. $1 month per line and 1 cent per min.
I have a grand stream sip adapter… Configured with my providers info and my creds. Phone can plug into it. Works just fine. Plus you can use any sip client to connect to the same line from mobile or PC.
Also, my old house had pots lines in every room. I took my grand stream and wired it into the house, not a phone. So I can plug regular phones into any of the original outlets and it works as it directly connected to the grand stream. I have 4 regular phones all running over original wires into the grandstream using sip
I did it for ya…good luck with your phd
It’s all about privacy.
I am amazed at services offered that run rampant in the home.
My ISP offers fiber. But only if you also sign up for managed wifi where they manage your internal net…no way
I got a quote for solar power…but they must use a 3rd party cloud to manage your power and it uses eth over electrical … If you use eth over electrical already, then it does whatever it wants in your home network …no way.
Cell phones? They all go into a guest wifi…not on my home network.
Universal media server works for me. I run it headless on a small instance. Streams my movies and music just fine.
We are all in same boat. Ive gotten dozens upon dozens of letters from companies. Most even say, sorry we were hacked 8 months ago. Letting you know all your personal info was stolen.
I’m sure my social security number, work history, previous addresses, relatives, cars I owned, houses…probably how many times I shit per day also.
Just keep your credit permanently frozen until you need it. Keeps credit card offers from your mailbox also…
How many non tech people would use this, especially if not in play store. 95% of people don’t know fdroid exists
Anonymity is impossible with enough data to put together a profile.
Improve user experience?
I don’t give a flying fuck if a web page loads .5 seconds faster.
What u care about is an interface that works, has labels instead of symbols, that doesn’t change every month trying to be more minimalist.
A bank website doesn’t need my browser history or my charges to Amex or what pets I have or what car I drive or the color of my bedroom. But they want all that and a mobile phone number to tie it all up with a common index. VoIP numbers are refused because they change too often.
That’s what pisses me off
True. Even government websites refuse to verify you over a VoIP line.
What’s frustrating is that most sites want your phone number. Even though it’s less secure than totp, but that sweet sweet data using your phone number as a common index is irresistible
+1 for CMK. It’s built on nagios. Been using it for decades. That shit is rock solid and has never let me down.
Prometheus is metrics and grafana reports it. IMHO, better reporting and graphing, better eye candy. But also harder to setup and get right.
CMK agent works on 95% of what you want with just the agent.
Can’t you just snip the OnStar wires?
There’s always DVDs of this stuff… Doesn’t have to be online.
Never forget, there was only a single key for DVD decryption, once found, DVDs could be copied. There were lawsuits trying to suppress the knowledge, but people started printing the key on tshirts… It was out there and DVD copy applications became common
I use it on reclaimed hardware … Works great for me. Has all the features you’d want for a home lab, and I run a few production hosts there as well
I have a rack in my garage.
My advice, keep it simple, keep it virtual.
I dumpster dove for hardware and run proxmox on hosts. Not even clustered, just simple stand alone proxmox hosts. Connect to my Synology storage device and done.
I run next cloud for webDav contacts and calendar (fuck Google), it does photo and do. Storage. The next client is free from F-Droid for Android and works on debian desktops like a charm.
I run Minecraft server
I run home automation server
I run a media server.
Proxmox backs everything up on schedule
All I need to do is get off-site backup setup for Synology important data and I’m all set.
It’s really not as hard as you think if you keep it simple
Seeing the windows 3.1 interface took me back to a much happier time.
From experience, with facial scan or fingerprint scan available on Apple, 3rd party app require it. E.g. okta MFA login, for those with apple phones, using face scan can be forced. I know you are free to decline and free to quit the company requiring it, but just like any new data set, you soon won’t be able to live without providing it.
Remember when a social security number was introduced, gov promised it wouldn’t be used as a identification number for any other purpose . Forward 50 years and now you can’t do anything without it.
How many other ‘traffic’ apps have a feature to report police locations. Waze I know had it.
