We talk about this so often in privacy communities because, although emails are particularly difficult to secure, they’re so important. Swapping your email provider or hosting your own is so easy to say and so hard to do, but so worth doing. I would suggest taking some steps towards FLOSS/FOSS and other privacy-friendly options in other areas first to get used to the idea of change and some of the difficulties you’ll handle in that realm

If you’re gonna self-host you’re gonna need to learn to use a search engine. Find a tool that can be used to check what ports are open for a machine, there a several available.

I would try searching things like “Linux cli port scanner”

I just don’t understand your logic. In your mind it’s okay to make an assumption about the content of a link based off the name of the link. However, it’s not okay to make an assumption about the content of the other link and find out why the OP started the discussion. Rather, you believe it would be better to attack the OP for not explaining what their links were to your satisfaction.

Have you hit it with anything to check if your ports are still open? There are a handful of tools for the task

What port do you have SSH set to? What ports did you change the services to? Is the SSH port open?

I haven’t put out any FOSS yet because I’m still writing a lot of “wtf is this” code but once I can I really want to try to hold myself to the idea of “I do this in my free time, so I provide it for free”

Lemmy is a link aggregator, this guy posted a link to his website and a brief (albeit lacking, I will agree with you there) description of what the links were. I don’t see any issue promoting free content in the forms of links on a link aggregator.

I also think there’s sort of a social agreement that if you’re going to make a comment about a post that exists purely as a link to elsewhere, you should probably click the link so that you know what is being discussed instead of what we’re doing, discussing the link itself lol.

Having the link at the top of the post like this, because it’s embedded into the actual post instead of the body like the second link, makes it pretty clear to me that that’s a discussion link and not a podcast link

Well, you’re here on Lemmy using the ActivityPub protocol. How’s the experience been? Does the filtering fit your needs?

I realize you might be talking about the server side rather than for users, ie if you were gonna set up your own instance. In which case, what you’re referring to is called “federation/defederation.” My understanding is that you just have to go flip a switch on your backend to filter out a whole instance, a person, a community etc and nobody on your instance will see it anymore.

For whatever reason I’m struggling to remember how to properly explain the difference between push/pull protocols, but AP only moves data at a users request.

This means that if I follow you on Mastodon, and you comment on a post by some other third party which I have no interaction with, it’s going to bring that comment to me and bring along any other related data. In this case, that means the post you commented on and all of the other comments and data related to that post.

This cycle works constantly, so I get content from the other side of the world because I (in reality, my instance, not me in particular) interacts with a chain of instances to keep data flowing

I look at it like this: ActivityPub is to RSS as a GUI is to a CLI.

Meaning, you could already use the tools (RSS or the CLI) that are there to do the task, but someone has created something (protocol, AP or application, GUI) to make that task easier. In the case of RSS and AP, that task is generally getting content in front of the user. With RSS I have to go hunt down RSS feeds and whatnot, but with AP I just interact with stuff and wait for the people I interact with to interact with stuff, and then I get content.

I don’t think I could restate this any better. So many people hear about “logical brain” and “emotional brain” and just start trying to eliminate any emotion from logic.

Brother the entire reason we invented homes was because we didn’t fuckin like the alternative. But if we used logic way back in cave man time, it would have been more individually efficient to burn those logs for warmth. It took emotions to get us to the next step and then realise that it was more systemically efficient to burn logs inside of a little cabin and only then could we start applying logic to housing.

I don’t know anything about you, but for the sake of argument, imagine you’re part of a marginalized group. Now, imagine that you use a product. The owner of said product has openly stated that they hate your very existence because you’re part of that marginalized group. You have decided that this is a good reason to stop giving them your money.

When does free speech come into this? How does one person’s money/profit affect another’s right to speak? It doesn’t. Choosing where you spend your money is you utilizing your freedom to express yourself via your wallet, just the same as they chose to express themself via words. Both the objector and the CEO are saying “I disagree with your views on the world and as such no longer desire your business”. Well, maybe the CEO still wants your business.
