  • I mean, it’s been 15+ years since smartphones hit the market as a regular device, so those people where only in their mid/late 60’s when that transition happened. And there are solutions in place for both digital access without smartphone and physical only access. I’m not sure I see how that is hostile to elderly or people that can’t/won’t use a smartphone or insist on physical access. Obviously physical access is going to be a hassle, that’s why it’s not the default anymore.

  • It’s a must for me. My phone is my primary day-to-day computer, so I need to be able to so everything from that. Unfortunately that is also why I’m not using graphene OS, because our government 2FA system doesn’t work in graphene OS (even with play services installed) so it’s impossible to do anything. I can’t check anything WRT banking, schools, taxes, daycare, doctors appointments, hospital record or change anything that requires the involvement of city hall, including checking digital mail from the municipality or government. It’s basically not possible to function in our society without it.

If you actually read my comment, you’d see I’m not criticising anything HP related at all. I’m stating I don’t understand it (this is not criticising), especially when it supports YT, but that’s also it. The only thing I’m criticising is supporting YT, not that they watch HP video essays.

OK…but why would you do that!? Your life surely would be no worse without that. I get being a fan and all that, I grew up with HP,. I’ve read the books several times and seen the movies several times. HP was a huge part of my upbringing and I bought the books at release. But I just don’t get watching a 10h video essay on it, much less while supporting YT.

  • I would reall love to have an open source watch, but unfortunately both the pinetime and bangle.js 2 lack severely in the activity tracking, which is the primary reason for me to have a smart watch.

I’m not sure how the screen is on the pinetime, but on the bangle.js 2 it’s surprisingly bad. Not a deal breaker by itself, but combined with a sort of limping experience on other parts, it’s not a good product (yet).

A huge part (maybe the most important one) of academic work, is to argue why your ideas are worth listening to and discuss and present them. This is not the same as writing fiction where you can just use a pseudonym, people will be looking you up to see what kind of educational background you have, which university you got the PhD from etc. No place worth having a PhD from is going to let you use a pseudonym, let alone hire you under a different name than your legal name.

I’m sorry, but if using your real name is a deal breaker for you, even with an employer (I.e. the professor example you’re giving), you’re very unlikely to succeed with this.
