First you need to specify a bit more on what you mean by file server. Are you looking for a network attached storage for home use, or remote use as well? Or are you talking something like a seed box for torrenting Etc. What general software environment will you be working with and what others are you comfortable with.

293·1 year agoYep. Enshitification behavior doesn’t cease once you’re technically a paying customer. If they hadn’t made a habit of enshitification. Clawing features away to put behind a paywall I’d give them some support. But I prefer foss anyhow. And for myself, I’m not missing anything.

12·1 year agoWhy would I throw more Pearls Before swine with a clown shoes bad faith response like that? Your participating in a fallacy again. Attacking the messenger. Not what was said. And funny his reporting was good enough for everyone when he was calling out the United States. Just suddenly he loses all credibility when it’s your team. Odd how that works lol.
And quite literally in the video they address what you say. The lack of victims crying out doesn’t mean there’s no victims. China won’t let them make a statement or talk to the public. That’s literally the problem. And you know it.
But I’m going to handle you the same way I handle bad faith economic liberals. Bye Felecia!

34·1 year agoI didn’t make those claims. Sterilization et all. You debunked nothing. Yes some are making fantastic claims with no proof. All I did was state that China was imprisoning many and oppressing them along with other groups. And I provided links to actual people you deny existence of who have been personally impacted. It’s a hypocritical and tone deaf behavior. But also unsurprising.

25·1 year agoSad. You can’t address what was said. You don’t even have an interest in looking into it. Hypocritically squealing about propaganda. While spouting it. There’s plenty to criticize the United States on. A lot of the same things you can criticize China on. Well not you. People who thank you critically and engage in good faith however.

35·1 year agoIt’s literally in a video you refused to watch. Actual families confronting a CCP government official about the imprisonment of their loved ones. Though I’m sure you will just hand wave that all away and claim they were manufactured by the cia. Because you’re not here debating anything in good faith.
And Hell while we’re at it. Since you chuckleheads are blocked by the China you defend so much. Go read up on Naomi Wu she was practically an unofficial brand ambassador for creality in Shenzhen. A truly fascinating and wonderful person with a real passion for technology. And creativity. Who made the sin of talking about her life. And how the CCPs bone headed policies had impacted her. My words not hers. She spoke very differentially and sparingly about the idiotic policies. Many of which even the CCP have distance themselves from such as the one child policy. But they are so insecure and fragile that her even talking about her early childhood was too much for them to take.
The true irony is that she is the very sort of person they should be promoting, elevating to prove that they changed from those days and those policies. That they were the sort of people leninists always defend them as. Funny they didn’t. Instead threatening her and her loved ones.
I tend not to bring her up by name. Because she is not an activist and just wants to try to live her life. And I respect that. But it’s relatively safe here as I said since you all are blocked in China. It likely won’t get back in a negative way. And I’m sure you’ll just hand wave it away as somehow being more CIA psyops. Sounding as crazy as the local magats conspiracy theories.

24·1 year agoOh believe me I have. Medhi Hasan is just a quick easy link to see if you were being genuine or not. Not. One of my favorite YouTubers lived in shenzhen. She doesn’t post anymore. Because she and her partner who happens to be a trans Uyghur we’re physically threatened and called out by the government for mild criticisms. Which is extremely sad since she was very good representation for people in China in general. And would have shown that the government of China isn’t as bigoted and racist as it obviously is had they simply not been so insecure that they couldn’t take such mild criticism.
Oh by the way congratulations on your fallacy. Attacking the messenger. You didn’t refute anything from the segment. I mean I would have been surprised. Let me tell you floored if you had. But we know better than that.

4·1 year agoInteresting. Will have to take a look at it later. I currently use Jellyfin and don’t have many issues. The only thing that might be a pain point is tuner support. I didn’t see anything mentioned. But looks nice otherwise. And intrigued to see its largely in Go.

31·2 years agoSo Google is selling license for code and technologies. They’ve shown no ownership of in a competitor’s product? Google is actively funding litigious troll shell corporations who shown no actual harm to harass and drain competitors resources? Google is creating and using secret apis for themselves. Breaking the ones for third parties in order to hold them back?
I’m not saying Google’s good Or anything. Not defending them in any way. But they’ve got a long way to go before they reach Microsoft level. Microsoft is literally the reason why before going public. Google had the motto of don’t be evil.

15·2 years agoMicrosoft is the OG. The other two are just imitators. The only reason Microsoft happens to step carefully. Was a little thing that happened in the late 1990s. That all penalties were largely waived for. But still it frightened them enough to behave better for a short while.

3·2 years agoYes I think that’s what they’re calling it now. They used to call it something else. But it generally works everywhere windows works. Though I don’t have very many windows machines myself and much prefer KDE connect. But there is something similar. Apple has one too. But it strictly only works with iPhones.

7·2 years agoSeparating software and hardware would be a good start. Though that may be a big ask as that’s been Apple’s schtick from the start. But seeing as it’s a big part of Apple’s anticompetitive practices, not outrageous.
Then you’re going to be limited to SMB generally because of windows. If you didn’t need Windows NFS is always the superior choice. But only the pro version of Windows has any NFS support.
Just getting started pretty much any hardware will do. One of the best most accessible ways of doing it is something like a cheap Raspberry Pi computer even two gigabytes of memory is enough to get started. You won’t necessarily need the bigger ones. But generally more tends to be better. Combined with some of the more purpose built OS images for things like open media vault or own cloud. It’s a pretty easy and low bar for entry.
After that it really just depends on your interest, needs, and comfort levels. You could just as easily go into eBay and buy a used $100 E-Waste business Tower. It will give you a bit more swap ability and upgradability where you can add things like 2.5 or 10 gigabit networking if you absolutely need faster. A better method of organizing and mounting storage physically. And a few other amenities. As well as some more options software wise. But if you are really new to this. And you really want to do something a bit more DIY that you control as opposed to something like a Synology Nas. It’s hard to go wrong starting with something like a Raspberry Pi.
Just make sure to keep up on your three two one. Three different copies of your data, on two different types of media, with at least one of them stored off site.
