Out of a desire not to switch, I’m going to ask what I know to be a naive/dumb question: what’s the worst that can happen? It’s a mature gpl codebase

Privacy@lemmy.ml•My Process in privacy(open for suggestions)
10·1 month agoFirefox is my daily drive and I use Ungoogled Chromium for the rare times Firefox doesn’t work
I use LibreOffice BTW
There are plenty of innocuous uses. I’ll use it to find the name of something I can’t remember or as a thesaurus.
I run ollama locally and sometimes lumo
I have a spotify subscription, but I don’t personally use it. It’s for my parents. It solves too many problems for me

I guess if you can trust ddg using ms search w/o sending information back, you can do the same with ai?
What would ypu suggest they use instead?
I like it. There are some questions I need a quick answer for. Code syntax for example. I don’t need to read stack exchange. I just need the one quick thing.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Does your family is also against your privacy means?
3·8 months agoParry and hit back. Ask her why it matters what you use if you can function with them as if you use google. Then return fire with your favorite reason not to use google. For me, I like to open the dev tools in Firefox, and show the head of any website. Let them choose. Find the line with google analytics, google tag service, or google ad sense. “Wow this website has nothing to do with google. Why is this here? To track you. Did you know that google can track your mouse? Even if you don’t click on anything? Or they can track you by installing fonts?” Etc. Etc. Scare the shit out of them and they’ll leave you alone. Hopefully you can slowly begin to convert them.

Fairphone4 user here. Fairphone is the kind of environment you go into knowing there are tradeoffs (e.g. the camera sucks) but for me, what you gain in terms of privacy and the downright respect they have for you as a customer are worth those tradeoffs.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•How to get TSA PreCheck while protecting privacy?
1·10 months agoI’m confused by the goal and the plan. You have to get pre check for your job, but you find it invasive. So you ruin one of the biometric samples they take? Won’t they look at it more carefully? I doubt they will just throw their handd in the air and say fuck it

Saying you don’t need privacy because you have nothing to hide is like saying you don’t need freedom of speech because you have nothing to say.
