beep boop
And its still better :)
What are these worth currently?
Always happy to see you post!
Here we go again
Gotta make space for dat AI stuff ya know. Cuz thats the future n shit.
Any Pixel or Fairphone will work even if brand new usually. With Pixels you dont even need a bootloader unlock code, but they are honestly kinda trash devices in terms of repairabilty and features. Get yourself a Fairphone fellas, best decision i ever made (If you can live with a bit of thicc boi of a phone). Slap CalyxOS on dat thang and enjoy life.
Is the current generation of street view still just snapshots from different positions with a 360° camera? I thought it was proper 3D scans with images mapped onto it by now. I admit i havent actually used it in years.
But yeah if its just isolated 2D images then its probably not as much as i thought. The processing would still be tough i think but i dont know enough to even guess that properly.
I think doing small scale demonstrations would be cool. The community would probably be able to learn and improve from it a lot and eventually it could be scaled up.
Even the internet archive is nothing in comparison to the image data used for street view.
Its of course totally “technically” possible, but it would require some veeery generous donations from some pretty rich people.
Even if you get people to use their phones to just record everything around them, geo-tag it and upload it. All that data would still have to be stitched together by some big ass GPU cluster that does things that currently only big tech companies can do properly at scale.
Gathering street view like data, processing it, running the service and keeping it up to date would require millions if not billions of dollars/euros in capturing equipment, server farms, wages, electricity, lawfirms.
If you want something thats compareable to the google service, its entirely impossible to do it with a project structure like osm has.
Even if someone had the funding to get started, they would most likely get bought out by google or apple or microsoft very quickly once they got comparable results.
The elephants reinvented paywalls??!?!
That is indeed deeply human.
Well put :)
Yeah i am just speculating. But so are people believing that its secure. Just like not having proof against god, doesnt make god real. If something cant be proven to be secure, it should be assumed that its compromised. There is no solution to this other than proving that its secure by releasing source code.
Its a closed source operating system dude, they can do whatever they want. Just because there are lawsuits, doesnt mean they dont have a backdoor to your phone.
They can literally force apple to pretend that they didnt give them a backdoor. There are basically no limits to law enforcement powers as long as they say the word “terorrism”.
Its not a matter of “have they done it” its just that the US feds can legally force any corporation to do as they please under threat of violence while binding them with gag orders.
Even if there is no proof so far, there is no reason to believe that they havent done so, because they legally can.
Its also specifically disallowed to deploy any kind of system that automatically notifies the public in case law enforcement compromises a companies servers as part of an investigation. Apple used to have such a warrant canary but they removed it some years ago.
See Warrant Canary
Also maybe cops, soldiers and security guards.
You can install stuff during imaging with root access afaik but yeah would be hard to do accidentally.
You can restrict the permissions of apps quite well and as another user said they are somewhat sandboxed. As long as you dont install anything with root access (like play services) it shouldnt matter too much. Imo its still very much worth to have the control you get through a degoogled OS even if you might not have Snowden level opsec.
If my physical safety was in danger i would think about it more tho. But at that point you would want to remove almost everything from your phones hardware.
This is a regular occurence. Google breaks the newpipe extractor > Devs take 2-3 days > Its fixed and working > repeat every few weeks/months
In germany only on a per request basis not by default likevwith this. Both are questionable but one is much worse imo.
Yeah but it demonstrates googles unwillingness to cooperate and give fair warnings.
