I would suggest isolating any agentic stuff as far as possible - either a virtual machine with NAT (no access to loyal network) or a separate machine behind a string firewall.

While Lemmy in general has a rather negative sentiment towards AI, that doesn’t mean there’s noone interested in such content. Especially when it comes to open source, open weights and full control (local/self hosting) AI can be a useful tool from my perspective where I see little reason to reject it just out of spite.

Even if you fundamentally oppose AI, I think it’s good to catch up with the news. I also read (and upvote) news about Trump, Musk, Putin etc. That doesn’t mean I agree or support their actions, just that I appeciate the information.

IMO there are sufficient search engines to find products in online shops, to check availability, compare prices etc.

I see the main selling point of Amazon in the huge assortment (you can get everything in one place without shipping fees), the user ratings (although the quality massively declined during the last years) and the fast delivery. I’m boycotting them for around one year now and everytime I need to order a strange combination of things I’m getting reminded how convenient it used to be. I’d be interested to know how well this works if there aren’t 3 (!) hotspots in 1 (!) room. If that is a hard requirement for it to work accurately, I don’t see many applications for this technology. At least not in its current version.

I use LibreOffice to change PDF files. I’m not a heavy user, but for my needs that worked like a charm so far.

I use the regular KeePass 2 and love it. It looks a bit oldfashioned but is a very powerful tool once you get used to it a bit. As there are plenty of addons you can also easily extend the standard feature set with further options.

When using FreeCAD for 3D printing, you don’t necessarily have to add measures/constraints to everything, so I’d assume it’s similar here.

As a ‘last resort’ if you don’t find any technical tasks in the projects you’d like to contribute to, there’s also plenty of other ways to help:

• Provide new translations into foreign languages
• Create detailed bug reports
• Do in-depth tests of new beta versions or nightly builds
• Provide a download mirror for the software or seed it via torrent
• Donate money to the core maintainers
• Improve the documentation
• Create (video) tutorials to improve the start for other users and make the software known to a broader audience
• Register in forums and help other users with their issues

Or simply ask the maintainers how you might contribute in a meaningful way. I’m sure they’ll appreciate your offer!
