Microsoft could have done it if storage was all. They got the infrastructure, the tech, cdn infrastructure , and even had a lot of big business customers already using Azures media streaming services. Instead they are withdrawing.
A classic nerd from Norway.

The biggest drain is the copyright fights, I’m guessing. Defending against and pleasing every big company with an interest.
I know I heard my name called occasionally as a kid. Clear as day but directionless, seemingly from very close to me. I figured its just a bug in a developing mind. But could also be that my mom got damn angry if I didnt hear her calling so I was always listening for it, and like the article describe, I picked up noise and the brain filled in the expectation.
Should be govt supported online libraries. Not under regular copyright rules (but they aren’t allowed to profit or redistribute it either) but for potentially culturally relevant content that is 5 or more years since publication.
A cookie banner with “Yes track me” and “Choose how much you want us to track you” button (on the retailer for my country, doesn’t seem to appear on the dot com site) doesn’t inspire confidence.
Hows their ink screens? I stayed with kindle primarily for their paperwhite, which is darn comfortable even in direct sunlight.
Nice. Why use ‘-’, and not ‘+’ like we are used to from google? One argument against ‘-’ is that some people use it as part of their name.
Friends, family, and even people you briefly meet, rat you out. Often without them even knowing by sharing their list of phone contacts.
I also just find uBlock Origin supports more advanced features.
Googling it and according to one answer the only difference between uBlock Origin and AdGuard browser extensions is that uBlock has a feature where they can hide stuff instead of completely blocking it. Two comments said AdGuard was the more techy one, and most users would prefer uBlock Origin because of that. A bunch of comments are people who obviously havent tried them both. Some are confusion about the difference between AdGuard desktop program and AdGuard browser extensions.
Maybe better if I just test it for myself.
some of the functionality being locked behind a paywall
The entire desktop app, yes. That does DNS blocking. Not the browser extensions, no blocked features there.
switched back to the free browser extensions for a reason I dont remember anymore.
I remember now. It caused havok with a lot of UWP apps. So I went to browser-extensions only.
If you use say, Firefox for Android, then you don’t have much choice besides uBlock,
Or AdGuard. I run the AdGuard browser extension on my Firefox for Android. It claims to also have one for iOS Safari. It has a paid desktop app, and that one add DNS blocks. I tried it once and paid for a license, but then I switched back to the free browser extensions for a reason I dont remember anymore.
To all you uBlock Origin fans: Any reason why nobody ever recommend AdGuard over uBlock Origin? Anything questionable about it? Or is it just that uBlock is well-known?
Usb sticks corrupts damn easily. Even faster carrying them around. Learnt that the hard way.
Or does anyone know about an usb stick that is practically immortal, that they can recommend?
You might not know if an app on your computer uses encryption when it communicates. And you dont know if a ssl cert has been exposed but not revoked yet. So no, you cant trust https alone.
And I’ve seen just how easy it is to setup a fake wifi and have peoples phones be autoconnected to it because the victims have an old public network in the “remembered networks” list. On a dev conference.
So i use either use vpn or a private mobile network. Well, honestly I actually don’t. I suck at practicing what I preach. Convenience versus risk.
I’d prefer me getting permanently locked out over someone who isnt me getting allowed in. Even more so to services which have my credit card number.
But unlikely anyway, as long as I save my pass and 2fa to a password manager, and keep the backup codes backed up.
Stop giving them ideas!
Nah just kidding, I think they have been working on this idea for a long time already. It just isn’t feasible yet. When it becomes possible to stream a screen in high quality, high resolution, relatively low bandwidth, to most of their customers, all big cloud providers will jump right on it. And I think it can be possible soon, if someone figures out how to make an AI-based streaming compression method that works better than streaming compressions we have today.
Oh, I do. Probably for years longer than necessary.
But for such a thing as the “Not now” button and there wont barely be software left.
Of course they dont. Not a chance with that much video added every hour. Also everything gotta be automated. And in favor of those who can make the most legal trouble. And thats companies, not the many various smaller IP-owners.
Just rubs me the wrong way that only Google are finding this business worth it. None of the other companies, even with massive amounts of storage and cdn infrastructure, are able to compete for long.
