In support of that theory, there was a multiplayer video game study a while back that found it was the less skilled men who were assholes to women players. The better players didn’t seem to care about their teammates gender. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_and_video_games#Male_behavior_towards_female_gamers

Depends on whether the AI boom is like the canal boom (fizzled), or the railroad boom (still going, arguably underinvested).

3·1 month agoIt’s kind of interesting how religions handle change in their theology. The Catholics have very few teachings that have been designated “infallible” - almost everything is potentially up for grabs (https://uscatholic.org/articles/201105/is-there-a-list-of-infallible-teachings/). Judaism has a whole thing about “since God gave the Torah to us at Sinai, it is now ours to interpret, and God himself said that we should rule on legal matters by majority vote (Exodus 23:2)” (https://www.mayimachronim.com/not-in-heaven-the-snake-oven-of-akhnai/) I am sure other religions have their own get out of jail cards, too.

6·1 month agoHospitals in areas with large JW populations have opaque IV bags available, and at patient’s request will lie to visitors about what is in it. Members have been “following their conscience” for decades, and I suspect this change is more about not ostrasizing those members than actually changing behavior.

science@lemmy.world•Conservatives are dying at higher rates than liberals. A new study points to mistrust in medicineEnglish
9·4 months agoThere weren’t disparities by political alignment 30 years ago, though.
we draw on… the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health… which has tracked a nationally representative cohort of people who were adolescents in the 1990s… over the course of their lifetimes… includes a measure of political beliefs: self-reported liberal–conservative placement.
We find that conservative Americans in this cohort, who were about as healthy as liberals in the early 2010s, experienced worsening health through the 2010s and higher mortality in the early 2020s. Roughly half of this new health gap is due to people changing their ideology over time, with new entrants to the conservative coalition being less healthy than new liberals. But another sizeable share is due to people who were already liberal or conservative diverging more in health over time…
By the 2020s, conservatives were dying at significantly higher rates than liberals, with the gap concentrated in internal causes (for example, heart disease, cancer and stroke). The divide since 2020 is substantial: while only 0.2% of ‘very liberal’ respondents died of internal causes between 2020 and 2022, the probability for people who identified as ‘very conservative’ was 1.14 percentage points higher… This gap is not limited to deaths from COVID-19 and is not reducible to demographic or geographic differences between the groups, nor is it a pure function of ageing: previous cohorts’ death patterns in older data did not show a similar correlation between health and ideology before 2010.
Before it was collected as a compendium of official parts, sure, but most of the individual books (both the ones that made it into the current version and additional ones that ended up being rejected) were around. The Old Testament ones were already written down, and most of the Gospels were at least oral tradition very early on.
I believe it was over one hundred years before the Gospels were all written down, and early Christian sects had passionate disagreement over which texts were official or hearsay, but it’s not like they were completely without religious texts.
I don’t know, I would consider our hard-wiring to seek out social relationships or to love our children to be a part of what makes us human. (As part of a basket, in the sense that having four legs is part of what makes a dog a dog, but not all dogs have four legs.)
Recognizing our wiring puts us in the best position to strategize how to work around it, if we want to. Like trying to not eat cookies from the pantry via willpower will always ultimately fail, but not having any cookies in the pantry has a good chance of preventing excessive cookie eating.
