If you want a private desktop OS you either use a debloated Windows which can break, or Linux but it’s not always easy to use, but I’ve never heard of anyone use a de-googled Chrome OS, smth like Graphene OS but for desktops. I’ve actually never used Chrome OS but to my knowledge it’s open-source, easy to use and can already run Android apps making it a strong option
ChromeOS is also Android basically, no?
So… GrapheneOS in desktop mode. I don’t know the details, but there’s that I think. Kinda just hook up the phone to a dock with a monitor. Great option, more secure than linux.
You can try a regular linux distro with gnome. It’s a normal OS nowadays. I don’t see anything more or less complicated. Windows is more overwhelming imo with all the bloat you have to remove with some scripts downloaded off some russian forum, and all the settings within settings…
shame its proprietary
There is an open source version.
To the best of my knowledge, that already exists and is called Chromium OS.
None of the chromebooks are have open bootloaders though?
Idk if they have open bootloader, but by my post I meant installing Chrome OS on a device that isn’t necessarily a Chromebook, smth that has Windows MacOS or Linux pre-installed
A ton of them are supported by coreboot. I dont know if this is an individual or a community but here is where you starr to free your chrome device:
Mrchromebox is the way. I have an old Acer Chromebook that I use for distro hopping, was using MX with KDE Plasma for a while with no issues. This week I’ve been trying to get FreeBSD to work on it…well I got FreeBSD to work, but I can’t seem to get any DE running with it…yet.
There is - ChromiumOS But I just heard from it and never tried it
But isn’t ChromeOS == Chromium OS? Or am I missing smth?
Chromium is FOSS that anyone can use and build upon but, primarily built by google themselves. Chrome is proprietary software that is owned by google.
Chrome OS is based in Gentoo , maybe this distro is what you are looking for. In the end is a distro like many others but it was modified by google
