Samsung is retiring it’s messages app, and I don’t want to install Google messages to replace it.
What apps are you using instead and what do you like or hate about them?

Quik is the one I use. It has a nice design to it https://github.com/quik-sms/quik
Another for QUIK. I hate SMS, but QUIK is great.
I also use QUIK and love all its features, most especially the minimal and very customizable UI
The Fossify suite has a messages app. Available on Fdroid. No internet access, no trackers.
It’s not as polished visually as the mainstream apps but works absolutely fine.
