Gotta appreciate the irony of Nature’s paywalled article about a new, open-access journal.

Our analyses below reveal that US trade sanctions have generated consequences that US policy-makers may not have fully anticipated. Rather than merely restricting Chinese firms’ access to proprietary technologies, these measures are associated with accelerated engagement with scientific knowledge, reflected in both intensified use of publicly accessible science in patenting and increased participation in scientific knowledge production.
I’d say this is the law of unintended consequences at work, but seriously did anyone not see this coming?

MapQuest is a perfectly reasonable commercial alternative that has all of the things you’d expect - dynamically-loaded map tiles, turn-by-turn nav, etc. If you want to look at options that use OpenStreetMap data, I’ve found CoMaps to be very good. The biggest drawback is that you have to download maps (~100-300MB per geo area) all at once, which can be a problem if you’re on the road and don’t have great signal strength.

So maybe it’s a cyclic problem. You have to act like a psychopath to become a billionaire. And becoming a billionaire makes you act like a psychopath.

From the article and underlying research though, it’s weirder than that. The ultra wealthy literally do not evaluate risk the same way. It’s like they’re unable to comprehend a scenario where they might be disadvantaged or endangered.

Sad thing is, that’s a pretty safe bet.

remember the good ol’ days where he’d just get angry and throw a chair (I know he had denied this happened, but he’s a hard guy to believe)
I think some people don’t understand what a pastime is. I don’t care if someone solves chess just like I don’t care if someone uses AI to generate an image. I play chess to play it. I make art to make it. The doing is the point of it.

How can you tell here? I’m looking at it and I think I could do something very similar in Inkscape in a half hour or maybe an hour (I’m a little rusty). But it looks like normal vector art to me?

If you’re into self hosting at all check out caliber-web, which uses a calibre-compatible db/backend but a web-based fronted. I switched about 3 years ago after importing my old calibre db and never looked back (household is doing around 90 books/year)

This is one of those rare times where I need to decide whether I’m going to downvote just because I disagree.

But also more anxiety, shorter attention spans, and brain rot.
(According to my own anecdotal evidence)

That would explain why everything’s getting so janky. Just waiting for the 3-finger salute now.

Oh, we’re a bit ahead of schedule – we’re only in the Year of Our Ford 120
What most Americans call Communism and Socialism is meaningless because our leadership have been using those terms for ages to just mean “something bad”, and there’s a huge chunk of people who will simply never know any better.
Probably not. My kids are all monotonic.
I kind of like seeing him pop up here and there on the fediverse. He’s like that weird guy that wears a kilt and has a parrot that you see walking around the neighborhood sometimes - it adds some character.
