The problem is always that this is a “trust us!” situation. If I were an evil company and user Foo requested his data deleted, simply deleting it would be the worst possible choice. Something simple as creating another company that has a deal to buy data from you for cheapsies. They just happen to sell them Foo’s data right before you deleted it. Oh well, you did delete it so. Or just don’t delete it, just say you do (which is what I suspect most do anyway).

Those requesting data delete, are probably holding the most valuable data, maybe not for your company but for someone else.

It is very very hard to prove you have completely deleted something, maybe you just deleted 4 of the 5 copies.

I very much doubt it. People in general just don’t care, or even worse. They think that it is a good thing as it keeps baddies out (it won’t) and it will protect them (it won’t).

It seems line very dark times are ahead. Self hosting is good, but it also gives the other side a bright shining beacon to go after. If they know everything about 99% of the population already, they can spend a lot more resources to really get to know the last percent that actively tries to avoid it.

Not an answer to your question, but don’t let some gatekeeper… well, gate keep. There are many ways to selfhost. Running your own hardware is one, renting a VPS but hosting the services yourself is another one. One is not better than the other.

Just pick what is the best solution for you and your problem.

Ideally the services should only bind to localhost and not 0.0.0.0 or similar as well. Allowing both proxied and non-proxied requests will 99/100 times cause problems, and then one time it doesn’t it is just confusion for no benefit.

In some countries all forms of description of underage sexual activities are illegal. So the sentance “She was having sex” is perfectly legal, but add an age marker and it is illegal. “She was having sex on the day before her 18th birthday”.

It is hard to legislate around as there will always ve ways to avoid it and get around it. But all this just sounds like the normal hype => fear => hype => fear, etc cycle that all new tech goes through.
