I literally pay the same for Nebula, which is decidedly not my own media. Paying a subscription for your own media playback is so stupid.

I know I’m gonna get a lot of flack for suggesting this, but Vivaldi feels like what Firefox should have been. More customizability, less AI and sponsored crap. They are the only major browser offering an option for a small, reasonably sized tab bar rather than the tab bars with 3 layers of padding and more whitespace than text.

Additionally, Vivaldi doesn’t pester you with twice-a-day update pop-ups or worse, the dreaded “Restart to keep using Firefox,” it just gets out of your way like a good browser should.

I first found out about it last week and it served my purpose well. It has options for what you want to name the file based on the metadata too!

No, I mean 500Mb/s, as my Internet will be 300Mb/s. My needs are not great.

I also use ZArchiver and unzipping is zippy (sorry) in my experience. Not quite as fast as Linux but that’s to be expected considering the hardware difference.

However Windows is quite slow in this regard in my experience. It can easily take 30 seconds to extract a zip file that Linux can do in under a second, often with a sub 1MBps throughput. This is on an NVMe SSD.

I’ve used it for many of my videos and it’s quite good. It’s amazing for simple edits and can handle more advanced stuff, but from my experience it bogs down with many effects. For complicated projects I recommend Resolve, but for simple to medium complexity video edits I fully recommend Kdenlive, as it’s better and more crash resistant than all the other FOSS video editors.

Perhaps some components of the game can be open-sourced, especially regarding modding APIs and whatnot. Still allows them to keep some things closed for a while, but could expand the mods and optimization even further.

Paying for software is okay, except when it keeps trying to milk you even after paying for it, especially if it’s a subscription. This can come in the form of ads, the sale of personal information, or some other crap (such as binding arbitration).

Interestingly enough the €3k is, when converted to USD, almost exactly what I paid for, in cash, to buy my Street Triple a few weeks ago. I was weary of giving a ton of cash to some random stranger, and wanted to do a cashier’s check. He didn’t know what that was.

This makes me wonder, are cashier’s checks considered cash under this rule in the EU?

Name anything Vivaldi specifically (not Chromium-wide) has done to screw over their users. I can’t name a single thing, while I can name many Anti-User things Firefox has done.

Unfortunately, open-source becomes nearly meaningless when the cost to produce a fork becomes so prohibitive and the open-source project starts acting like a for-profit company.

And they wonder why their market share is decreasing.

The only major browser that actually seems to care about their users is Vivaldi, sadly.

It boils down to two broad categories for me:

1. How locked down the OS is on iPhones and iPads. We’ve seen recent progress (Safari extensions, retro console emulators), but we’re still far from a serious OS. iOS still lacks a proper file management system (especially for playing back local audio) and no side-loading is still a deal breaker.
2. Obscene markups for easily accessible parts. Apple still believes 8GB RAM is worth $200, and they believe 1TB storage is worth $800. I’d rather just get something with replaceable RAM and storage.

I currently use a 2021 Asus ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition and I really enjoy it. It’s a bit pricey at $1650 MSRP but it comes with a high end all AMD 5900HX, 6800M, 2 SoDIMM slots, and 2 M.2 slots. Plenty of ports: 3x USB-A, 1x USB-C, Ethernet, HDMI, headphone jack, and power jack; I’ve needed all of them and it’s just enough. Quite good battery life for a gaming laptop and supports USB-C charging. I currently dual boot Windows and Ubuntu. Biggest flaws are the preinstalled SSD is crap and there’s no webcam.

You will still earn the same amount of money from both free and premium users, while not being a dick. In fact, third party developers would be doing the work for you!

Additionally, having apps that can lower the engagement BS reduces your bandwidth costs!

You’ll get a crap ton more paying customers at the same time. I’d even become one.

Audacity’s implementation is not just clunky, it isn’t good either. Compare that to Music Speed Changer on Android and you’ll hear a huge difference in quality.

I can tolerate ads as long as it’s helping the creators and isn’t used to make the platform worse. The first condition is only sometimes satisfied and the 2nd is being straight up violated.

If they can fix how garbage search is and put the dislike count back, I’ll happily pay for premium as a thank you for making a great platform. But nope, they just focus on making the UI even worse.
